Breath Freshin' Chicken Jerky

Ain't nobody dope as me your breath so fresh so clean
I started clipping coupons here and there (made an attempt at my own version of extreme couponing but find it's unrealistic). Of course, I came across coupons for dog treats from beggin' strips to rawhides and these Milo Kitchen's treats. I cut a few to give Mochi a new treat. Sneaky girl always seems to know when a grocery bag contains new treats or toys. Spoiled brat.

I use to feed the dogs I had previously beggin' strips but upon turning over that label, I realized it's nothing but fillers. Treats should add nutritional value to your pups. I mosey on over to the Milo's Kitchen treats... there is attractive packaging and it looks convincing enough that it's good for you pets health. There's a limited number of ingredients and that's usually a good sign. However, one red alert is that they do use garlic powder. Granted, a large amount of garlic powder is needed to make a dog sick but the same goes for chocolate and you don't see me dipping my dog's treats in chocolate. So I avoided those treats. The only ones that seemed suitable enough for me to buy was the Milo Kitchen's Chicken Jerky.

Mochi grabbed these jerky treats right out of the grocery bag and gobbled it in only a few bites. Seeing how much she loved them, I took a stab at making some home-made jerky. It is healthier since home-made jerky doesn't have preservatives and what not.  I also added some parsley to keep her breath so fresh and so clean clean.

PR Intern verdict: She loved 'em just as much and now has fresher breath!

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 chicken breast
  • 2/3 C. unsalted chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 C. water
  • 1/2 tbsp dried parsley
DIRECTIONS:
1. Rinse chicken and remove fat. Fat causes the jerky to spoil faster.
2. Slice chicken breast into thin 1/8'' to 1/4'' slices. Slice with the grain.

3. Combine unsalted chicken broth, olive oil, water, and parsley. Stir.

4. Place the chicken slices in the broth marinade and turn to evenly coat.
5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour
6. Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
7. Place chicken on wire racks, keep slices separated. Use baking sheets if you do not have wire racks and turn every hour.
8. Place chicken on racks in oven for 3 or more hours.*
* Due to difference in meat size and ovens baking time may vary. Your jerky treats should be firm and dry. If in doubt, it is safer to go a little more dry and firm than underdone.

STORAGE:

Store your chicken jerky treats in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. Freeze for up to 8 months. Write date on the plastic bag to ensure treats are eaten in a timely matter.

  1. Any way to make these with a different meat? My dogs are both allergic to chicken.
